If a board is listed as food safe, it is safe to use for food preparation and serving. If it is listed as Not for Food Preparation, it is okay use it to serve food, but not for prepaation. Why the difference?
Our food safe boards, or food preparation safe, are constructed using hardwoods and mineral oils that are good for this purpose, such as walnut, cherry and maple. Charcuterie or cutting boards will usual fall in this category.
The Not for Food Preparation boards may be constructed using woods that may not be safe for food preparation based on their hardness or what is naturally in the wood, such as cedar or pine. They can be used for serving food as you are not cutting into the board. They could be painted or finished in something that is not for good food preparation, such as polyurethane. Noodle boards (stove covers) and serving trays will normally fall into this category.
